What Is A Robot?

There is no consensus on what qualifies as a robot, but there is general agreement among experts and the public that robots tend to have some or all of the following characteristics:

  • they are a physical machine;
  • they move around;
  • they operate a mechanical limb;
  • they sense and manipulate their environment; and
  • they exhibit intelligent behaviour, especially behaviour which mimics humans or other animals.

Why Do We Use Robots?

Today, commercial and industrial robots are in widespread use performing jobs more cheaply or more accurately and reliably than humans. They are also employed in jobs which are too dirty, dangerous, or dull to be suitable for humans. Robots are widely used in manufacturing, assembly, and packing; transport; earth and space exploration; surgery; weaponry; laboratory research; safety; and mass production of consumer and industrial goods.

What Are The Components Of Robotics

Robotics is the science of construction and utilisation of robots. Robotics involves the integration of four very different fields:

Mechanics Electricity Electronics Programming
Levers, gears and pulleys Wiring, resistors and motors Transistors and microchips Instructions and data
What parts the robot has to move How the robot moves its parts What the robot uses to think What the robot thinks about and how it makes its decisions
